The Cloud Migration Blind Spot: Why Secure Data Destruction Matters When Legacy Systems Are Retired (8 อ่าน)
16 ต.ค. 2569 16:19
Cloud migration is often viewed as a technology upgrade, but retiring legacy systems introduces a critical data security challenge. Old servers, storage drives, backup devices and virtual machines may continue to hold sensitive information long after applications have moved to the cloud.
Without proper secure data destruction , confidential records could remain accessible through decommissioned hardware, forgotten backups or outdated storage environments. These overlooked data sources may expose businesses to privacy breaches, compliance failures and unauthorised access.
A reliable retirement strategy should begin with a complete inventory of legacy assets and the information they contain. Organizations must then select appropriate sanitisation or physical destruction methods based on data sensitivity, storage technology and future equipment use. Documenting each stage also helps demonstrate accountability during audits.
Cloud migration should not end when workloads move successfully. Verifying that obsolete systems no longer retain recoverable information is equally important for reducing security risks and maintaining long-term data protection.
